SSC CGL interview: which post do you prefer and why — Income Tax Inspector or Assistant Audit Officer?
Model answer
There is no single right post, but there is a right way to answer: show that you have researched the roles and have a genuine, reasoned preference. Name your first preference clearly and explain why it fits you — if you prefer Income Tax Inspector, you might value fieldwork, direct impact on tax compliance, and interaction with people; if you prefer Assistant Audit Officer, you might value analytical, systematic work and financial scrutiny. Back the choice with a strength or interest of yours rather than only pay or posting location, since interviewers can tell when the answer is really about perceived comfort. Show you understand what the day-to-day work actually involves, which signals you will not be disappointed after joining. It is fine to say you would gladly serve in any allotted post, but still commit to a clear top choice — fence-sitting reads as indecision. Avoid criticising the posts you rank lower. A confident, well-reasoned preference tells the panel you make deliberate decisions, which is itself a quality they are assessing.
This is a guide to structure and approach, not a script to memorise — say it in your own words.
