SSC CGL interview: what qualities make a good government officer?

Model answer

Organise your answer around a few core qualities and briefly justify each, ideally with a nod to how you demonstrate them. Integrity comes first — a government officer handles public money and power, so honesty and resistance to corruption are non-negotiable. Second, a sense of service and empathy, because the work exists to help citizens, often the most vulnerable. Third, discipline and accountability: following rules, meeting deadlines, and owning outcomes. Fourth, sound judgement and the courage to take the correct decision even under pressure or influence. Fifth, clear communication and teamwork, since officers coordinate across departments and with the public. You can add adaptability, given transfers and changing policies. Rather than just listing adjectives, tie one or two to yourself with a short example — a time you were honest when it was inconvenient, or took responsibility for a mistake. Close by noting that these qualities matter more in government than almost anywhere else because the officer represents the state to ordinary people. This shows you understand the ethical weight of the job, not just its perks.

This is a guide to structure and approach, not a script to memorise — say it in your own words.
