SSC CGL interview: how will you handle pressure to act against the rules?
Model answer
This is an integrity test, so your stand must be clear while your handling stays practical. State the principle first: you would not act against the rules or the law, whatever the pressure, because a government officer's authority rests on following due process. Then show you can handle it without being needlessly rigid or naive. Explain your steps: understand exactly what is being asked and why, check the actual rule rather than assuming, and if the request is improper, decline politely but firmly and explain the correct procedure. If pressure continues, document it and escalate to a senior or the appropriate authority rather than quietly giving in. Distinguish between genuine flexibility the rules already allow — using discretion where it is permitted — and crossing a line, which you will not do. If it helps, give a small honest example of choosing the harder right over the easier wrong. Avoid bravado like "I would fight everyone"; calm, procedural firmness is more convincing. The panel wants to see that you will protect the public interest and process even when it is uncomfortable.
This is a guide to structure and approach, not a script to memorise — say it in your own words.
