Software developer interview: why do you want to work here and not a bigger company?
Model answer
Turn this into a chance to show you have researched the company and know what you want. Avoid generic flattery. Give specific, genuine reasons a smaller or particular company appeals: broader ownership and the chance to work across the stack, faster impact where your work ships and matters, closer mentorship, or a product or mission you actually care about. If you have used the product or admire something concrete about how they build, say so — it proves real interest. Balance it by acknowledging what big companies offer and explaining why this fits your current goals better, so you do not sound like you are settling. Connect it to your growth: at this stage you want to learn quickly, take responsibility, and see the results of your decisions. Keep it honest — if a bigger name or compensation matters to you too, do not pretend otherwise, but lead with fit and learning. Interviewers ask this to gauge whether you will stay and be motivated, so end by tying your strengths and ambitions to what the company is building. Sincerity beats a rehearsed pitch.
This is a guide to structure and approach, not a script to memorise — say it in your own words.
