Bank PO interview: what do you understand by NPA and why does it matter?
Model answer
Define it cleanly, then explain the impact. A Non-Performing Asset is a loan or advance where the borrower has not paid interest or principal for 90 days or more; it stops earning income for the bank. Break it into sub-standard, doubtful, and loss assets to show depth. Then explain why it matters: high NPAs erode profitability because the bank must set aside provisions from profits, they lock up capital that could have funded new lending, and they signal weak credit appraisal. At the system level, rising NPAs can slow credit growth for the whole economy. Mention prevention and resolution briefly — careful due diligence before lending, monitoring after disbursal, and mechanisms like the SARFAESI Act and the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code for recovery. Keep the definition precise; interviewers test whether you actually understand banking fundamentals versus memorised headlines. Avoid quoting specific NPA figures unless you are certain and current, since these change every year and a wrong number undermines an otherwise strong answer.
This is a guide to structure and approach, not a script to memorise — say it in your own words.
