Bank PO interview: how would you handle an angry customer at the branch?

Model answer

Use a calm, step-by-step approach and, if you can, a real example. Step one: listen fully without interrupting and let the customer vent — most anger comes from feeling unheard. Step two: acknowledge the problem and apologise for the inconvenience, even if the fault is not yours; you represent the bank. Step three: separate the emotion from the issue and ask specific questions to understand the actual problem, such as a failed transaction or a delayed cheque. Step four: explain clearly what you can do, give a realistic timeline, and never over-promise. Step five: follow up so the customer knows it was handled. If the matter is beyond your authority, escalate politely rather than arguing. Throughout, stay professional, keep your tone even, and protect other customers by moving the conversation aside if needed. Interviewers want to see patience, ownership, and process — not a hero story. Ending with "I would make sure they leave feeling respected, even if the answer was no" lands well.

This is a guide to structure and approach, not a script to memorise — say it in your own words.
