Bank PO interview: how has digital banking changed the role of a bank branch?

Model answer

Frame this as a shift in role, not a threat. Routine transactions — deposits, withdrawals, transfers, bill payments — have largely moved to UPI, mobile apps, and ATMs, so footfall for basic tasks has dropped. But the branch has not become irrelevant; its role has moved up the value chain. Explain that officers now focus on advisory work: loans, wealth and insurance products, resolving complex grievances, and serving customers who are not digitally comfortable, especially in semi-urban and rural areas. Add the financial-inclusion angle — branches and business correspondents still anchor trust for first-time account holders. As a PO, position yourself as someone who can bridge both worlds: use digital tools to work efficiently while giving customers the human judgement and relationship that an app cannot. You can also mention new responsibilities like cyber-fraud awareness and helping customers stay safe online. This shows you see technology as a partner that frees officers for higher-value work, which is exactly the mindset banks want.

This is a guide to structure and approach, not a script to memorise — say it in your own words.
